Are you crafting with the kids during the school holidays?
I love the fact that the school holidays give us more time to get creative; the kids love crafting, but term time is just so busy and we don’t always manage to fit it in. This week we’ve been working on a school homework project which involves making your own musical instrument, namely a shaker using a kitchen roll tube and dried rice; we’ve had one major spillage but it’s coming along nicely! We’re also going to make some of our fun bird feeders to keep our local birds happy during the busy nesting season. As I write this, there is an elaborate work of art in progress which began life as an empty tissue box; who knows what it’s going to be but they obviously have a plan!
When we need some craft inspiration, or just some extra craft supplies, I always check out the range available at The Works. Their craft supplies department has a huge selection of craft tools, kits and essentials, and with separate sections for specific crafts such as model making, knitting, paper crafts and jewellery making, it’s really easy to find what you’re looking for.
If you’re looking for craft inspiration, check out my top picks from The Works.
This Bright Hobby Yarn and Knitting Doll Set is a great set for introducing kids to knitting. Start them off making pretty braids with the classic wooden knitting doll, then they can move onto the practice knitting needles. There’s plenty of yarn included in lots of bright colours too.
This little Fairy Door is a lovely craft that opens up a whole world of imaginative play. Once the kids have decorated it with paint, pens, stickers or gems they can choose where to position it; I love the idea of finding a tree trunk in the garden to invite the fairies into. Perhaps they could make a fairy garden too and create a really desirable fairy home!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from crafting with the kids over the years, it’s that you can never have too much coloured paper! I love the selection in this A4 Embossed Brights Paperstack, there’s lots of different textures and colours which would really liven up cards, scrapbooks and collages.
If you like to work on a craft project in more than one session, this Decorate Your Own Scrapbook Kit is a lovely option. There’s a supply of photo corners to securely attach photos, cards and other treasures, plus 8 sheets of stickers and lots of printed paper to bring your pages to life. It would be a great way to organise a school homework project, or holiday memories; I really like the fact that it’s spiral bound which allows you to fill the pages as thickly as you like.
For a simple craft it’s hard to beat a session with some fun stamps. I like the range of designs in this 12 Stamper Pack, they’d be ideal for gift tags, cards, or just keeping little hands busy.
We love encouraging wildlife into our garden so this Wooden Birdhouse has to go on the list. Spring is nesting season, so now is a great time of year to introduce bird houses to the garden. Once we’ve had fun decorating it we’ll hang it up in the garden (out of reach of the local cats!) and watch to see if any birds move in.
Pottery painting is a lovely craft for kids, and you don’t need to spend a fortune or visit a special pottery cafe to have a go. This Mug Painting Set includes a brush and ceramic paints; once they’ve created a masterpiece you just oven bake the mug to set the design. I think these would make lovely personalised gifts, how about getting super-organised for Father’s Day?
What do you think of my selection? I love the variety of crafts on offer at The Works, and everything is so reasonably priced too – perfect for crafting with kids. You can check out the full craft supplies range here. I think we’re going to be very busy next week!
