Exploring the Isbjörn range of premium outdoor children's clothing, plus a chance to win a fantastic bundle of items from the range.

Are you getting outdoors and making the most of autumn?  The right clothing can make all the difference to a family outdoor adventure, and I’ve got a great giveaway that will help you get it right.  There’s a bundle of premium outdoor children’s clothing from Isbjörn of Sweden worth £180 up for grabs, read on for details on how to enter!

We love getting outside and exploring nature at this time of year, but the colder temperatures do mean we have to think a bit more carefully about what clothes the kids are wearing.  The wrong clothes can easily cut short or completely ruin a trip, whether that’s because of soggy socks, lack of layers, or just plain old cold hands!

We’ve recently been introduced to Swedish children’s outdoor clothing brand Isbjörn.  Founded in 2005 by two mums who struggled to find proper outdoor clothing for their children, the Isbjörn product range covers all aspects of outdoor wear, and is based on the principle that children should be allowed to enjoy outdoor activities in all weather conditions, while remaining warm, dry and comfortable.

We’ve been trying out some items from the range to see how they performed in the good old British climate.  Here’s how we got on.

HUSKY base layers

I think base layers are an absolute must in cold weather, but we’ve found in the past that some fabrics can make the kids a bit too hot.  The Isbjörn HUSKY range is made from ethically sourced Merino wool, and is available in three colours in sizes from 2 to 18 years, with prices starting at £50.

Lily is 6 years old and we went for the 122-128cm size sweater and long johns.  They’re a little roomy, which I’m pleased about; in the past she has found skin-tight base layers uncomfortable.  There’s also the added bonus of them lasting longer before she grows out of them!

The Husky top and long johns slipped on easily thanks to the smooth fabric, with none of the usual contortions to get those arms in.  Lily immediately commented that they felt lovely and soft; that’s the premium Merino wool at work, and it makes such a difference.  We’ve had synthetic base layers in the past, and the Husky products are just in a different league when it comes to feel and ease of wear.

Lily also loved the funky contrast stitching and the patterned waistband.  This pattern is a nod to the teeth of a polar bear, which makes sense once you know that Isbjörn is Swedish for ‘polar bear’.

We’ve put the Husky base layers through their paces on a few outdoor trips – including a rather long and chilly trick or treat session on Halloween! – and they’ve performed really well.  Lily stayed warm and cosy without needing to suddenly shed layers, and hasn’t once mentioned being uncomfortable.  The fact that she has put them on and promptly forgotten about them is clear evidence that they’re doing their job.

PANDA PrimaLoft® Hoodie

Sam pretty much lives in hoodies, and finds them a really great way to layer up in cold weather.  The PANDA hoodie is available in five colours in sizes from 2 to 14 years, with prices starting at £80.  Sam is 10 years old so we went for the 140-146cm size, which fits him perfectly.

The fabric combines PrimaLoft® yarn, polyester and spandex for a perfect blend of softness, stretch and durability.  There’s some clever technology going on too; the silver insulation performance fleece outperforms typical fleece in both wet and dry weather, and is pill resistant.  Basically, it’s designed to dry really fast and retain warmth really well.

Sam loved the look of the Panda hoodie and has pretty much lived in it ever since it arrived.  It’s got a lovely fleecy lining which he says feels really soft, especially around his head when he puts the hood up.    He absolutely hates being muffled up in cold weather clothes,  and the fabric is just the right weight to keep him warm without being too bulky.  He’s happy to throw it on over a t-shirt, or add a coat on top if it gets really cold.

There are lots of practical features too: a generous hood, comfy zip pockets, and – Sam’s favourite – thumb holes to give hands that extra bit of protection.

As I’ve already said, Sam has worn his Panda hoodie a lot, and he only does that with clothes he finds super-comfy and loves the look of.  It washes well and dries really quickly too – when I manage to persuade him to take it off!

Both kids gave their Isbjörn clothes a big thumbs-up.  There was no moaning about scratchy fabrics, uncomfortable seams, or being too hot or cold.  From a parent’s point of view, I really like the fact that they’re tough while still being really comfy; you can tell that the company’s ethos of producing children’s outdoor gear to the same standard as adult clothing has driven the design and choice of fabrics.  I also love that they’re easy and quick to wash.  They’ve already had lots of use on our outdoor trips this autumn, and given how much the kids have enjoyed wearing them I can only see that continuing.
