As we finally shake off the cold of winter, we can look ahead to warmer weather, more time outdoors and the arrival of spring. Spring brings with it sunshine, beautiful flowers, blue skies and a sense of hope and optimism – something we all need after 2020.
Of course, not every spring day is full of light and sunshine! Spring also often involves fresh, rainy downpours, which can leave us stuck indoors until those cloudbursts move on.
Easy ways to keep kids entertained indoors
If you’re struggling to keep kids entertained indoors, here are some simple ways you can keep your children busy and occupied until the sunshine returns.

Break out the colouring pens
Did you know that the relaxation and sense of calm that comes with colouring are similar to the effects of meditation? Sitting in a quiet place, focusing on a small, intricate task, slows your heart rate and your breathing. This in turn can help you to de-stress and relax.
As well as being a great way to help kids unwind, colouring also keeps them busy and engaged in a creative task that also happens to be nice and quiet! If you need ink to print off some online colouring sheets, click the link to discover the biggest retailer of Epson cartridges. There’s nothing more frustrating than realising you’ve run out of printer ink, so stocking up means you’ll always be prepared for some indoor creativity.

Baking
This activity will either evoke joy or utter dismay. For some, the idea of baking with the kids means mess, washing-up, and arguments over who gets to lick the spoon. For others, it’s the perfect opportunity to keep the kids entertained without a screen.
To get the best of both worlds, simply adapt your approach to suit you. To keep things super-simple, you could buy pre-made cupcakes or biscuits and let your children decorate them. If you’re happy with the full-on baking experience, search for some simple baking recipes online. Once you’ve chosen one, give each child a specific task to prevent arguments. Make sure they help you with the cleanup afterwards!

Try a colour scavenger hunt
Whether you have little ones who are just starting to get to grips with colours, or older children who are rather competitive, a colour scavenger hunt will keep everyone entertained.
This is a simple but effective activity. Just ask children to find items of a specific colour from around the house. You can add in some rules to make it trickier if you like; for example number of items, places they must be found, or a range of shapes. The element of competition can also be added if you set a time limit, or see who can find everything the fastest.

Get active
Just because you’re stuck indoors, doesn’t mean you can’t get the kids to burn off some pent-up energy. You could take inspiration from online PE celebrities and create your very own PE class, full of movements and actions to keep them busy. Or create a playlist of their favourite songs and have a dance competition in the living room. For something a little less frantic, try a child-friendly yoga video or online class.
And finally, if you can’t beat them – join them! If the rain is setting in for the day, you can always wrap the kids up warm, head outdoors and make the most of it. See who can make the biggest puddle or splash, or who can catch the most rainwater in a cup. Yes, you’ll all get wet, but you’ll have lots of fun doing it.
