clever small toy sorting and storage with blokpod

Welcome to a new review and giveaway, looking at a great storage solution for lego and toys with small pieces.  We’ve been putting the Blokpod through it’s paces, and I’ve got a great giveaway for you too, with a Blokpod worth £34.99 up for grabs.

Lego is probably the most played-with toy in our house.  It’s also the one that causes the most mess and storage issues!

Over the years we’ve tried various ways to keep our growing lego collection under control.  Clear plastic boxes with lids worked for a while, until the sheer volume of bricks meant that the kids were forever tipping the whole lot out in order to find the right piece.  We’ve tried those shallow drawer units, with the aim of keeping different sized pieces in different drawers.  That system was useful for about a day; by the time the kids had finished their first building session the pieces were all mixed in together, and we went back to the usual chaos of bricks!

So when I heard about Blokpod, which is designed to sort and store lego and other toys with small pieces, I was keen to see if it could make a difference to our storage problem.

Blokpod consists of four separate clear plastic compartments, which click together to form a tall cylinder.  Each of the top three compartments contains a plastic grid which acts like a sieve, allowing small blocks to fall through to the level below.  The grid gets smaller as you go down the levels, so by the time you get to the bottom layer your bricks are sorted into four sections, based on size.

It’s really easy to use; you literally chuck your bricks into the top.

As you can see, the bricks start to sort themselves as soon as they go in.  If like us you’ve got a lot of lego, it’s best to add your bricks in a few separate batches, this avoids overloading the top layer and makes the sorting process quicker.

Once you’ve added your bricks, you just pop the lid on and give the whole thing a gentle shake to complete the sorting.  The kids love this stage!

And here’s the finished result: four layers of bricks, sorted by size, with minimal effort.  How brilliant is that?

Each layer then twists apart, giving you access to all your beautifully sorted bricks.  When we first started using Blokpod the layers were quite stiff to separate; after a couple of weeks of use they’re easier to separate, but the kids still need a hand with this stage.  I actually like the fact that the whole thing stays together quite firmly, because when it inevitably gets knocked over it stays in one piece.

Blokpod is generously sized – the diameter is approximately 26cm – which means there’s a good surface area on each layer, making it really easy for kids to find what they want.

The layers are also shallow enough for little hands to dip into easily, and the clear plastic means you can see the bricks from all angles; both features that we’ve always struggled with when using the standard storage boxes that lego comes in.

You can tell that Blokpod has been designed with ease of use and practicality in mind; it just works.  It has actually had a big impact on how the kids play with lego too.  Because they can see all the bricks much easier, they don’t spend ages raking through the box for the piece they need, which means more time for creative fun.

From a parent’s point of view, Blokpod has a lot going for it.  It’s made from really sturdy plastic, it feels solid and I think it will be very durable.  I like the fact that it looks very modern and not overly childish; it blends into your decor much easier than most toy storage.  It has also stopped my kids tipping whole boxes of bricks all over the floor, then leaving the mess for someone else to clear up.  And the most surprising effect: the kids are really keen on using it.  The tidying up and sorting has clearly become part of the fun, and that’s a first in our house.

If you’re looking for a simple, practical way to re-organise your lego – or indeed any toy with small parts – Blokpod is a great option.  Blokpod retails for £34.99 and is available to buy from Amazon – and you can be in with a chance of winning one by entering my competition, just follow the instructions below.  Good luck!
