Welcome to our latest kids gardening project!

We’re joining up with Tiger Sheds for their #TigerGrowAlong.  They’ve sent us a fab kit so we can grow some lovely fresh herbs.

Planting up a small herb garden in a container is a great gardening project for children.  It’s small enough for them to manage it all on their own, the seeds are quick to germinate so they won’t lose interest, and it’s a great opportunity to teach them about where their food comes from.

The first job was to line our planter so that the compost doesn’t leak out; we used a large plastic bag secured with tacks.

Next, we filled our planter up with compost and patted it down on the top.

We’re using SeedCell, which is a simple, fun way to plant seeds – and perfect for kids.  Each triangular cell contains the seeds; all you need to do is snap them apart and push them into the soil.

The cells are made from natural pulp, which absorbs moisture to provide the right conditions for germination.  As the seedlings grow, the cell will biodegrade to produce a nourishing mulch for the plants.  Clever isn’t it?

After a good soak with the watering can, our Grow Along project was up and running.

The kids have been keeping a watchful eye on it ever since, and were so excited when the tiny seedlings started to appear.  Take a look at how they’re getting on after almost three weeks:

Some cells have romped ahead as you can see, but there are signs of life in all of them and it won’t be long before the whole planter has sprung into life.

The kids are really enjoying their Grow Along project, and we’re all looking forward to having some lovely fresh herbs to cook with soon.  Check out the #TigerGrowAlong hashtag on social media to see how we’re getting on – and if you’ve grown herbs with the kids don’t forget to share your pictures too 🙂
