Looking to get the kids involved in the garden this spring? We've visited Dobbies Garden Centres and created three easy container gardening projects to get you inspired. Add some spring blooms to the garden and have fun at the same time!

Well the weather has finally decided to behave like spring, hurrah!

Now that things have started to warm up, you can really get cracking on some fun family gardening projects.  Dobbies Garden Centres are encouraging us all to do just that with their #SpringBlooms campaign, and they asked us to get involved and hopefully inspire you to do the same.

We popped into our local Dobbies store and picked up some plants, tools and accessories from their spring range.  There’s a great selection to choose from, and lots of inspiring ideas for getting out there and enjoying your garden.  The kids decided they wanted to plant up some containers, so we chose three sets of plants, lovely containers to put them in, and some cute finishing touches.  Here’s what we created.

Mini herb garden

We do most of our grow-your-own at the allotment, but it’s great to have herbs in the garden so we can easily grab them for cooking.  A neat container with a few varieties takes minutes to create, and looks really nice too.  We found a great value carry pack of six different herbs at Dobbies, which made it even easier for the kids to get planting.

As well as being a good introduction to grow-your-own, herbs are brilliant for some sensory exploration.  Lots of varieties are quite tactile, and of course there are lovely smells on offer!

One by one, we carefully took the plants out of their pots and put them in their new home.

Watering is always one of their favourite bits!

Hanging basket

Hanging baskets are fantastic for creating wow factor in a small space, and if you position them carefully you’ll be able to enjoy them from indoors as well.

We chose a selection of bedding plants that would trail nicely over the sides of the basket, and a few that would fill out the top as well.  It won’t be long before they bulk up and create a lovely display.

Flower container

We liked the idea of a matching pair of containers, so to go alongside the herb garden we planted up some bedding plants that will give us a burst of colour.  Once everything was in the soil, it was time to get busy with the fab accessories we found at Dobbies.

Little personal touches like this always go down well with children in my experience; mine love the opportunity to ‘decorate’ their handiwork and make a real display.  The glass globes are solar lights which are super-easy to push into the soil and will highlight the plants once the light starts to fade.  The windmill and the owl are just pure fun!
